Georgia Southern awards art students in âUndergraduate Juried 2022â exhibition
The Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art (BFSDoArt) at 91Âț»app recently presented awards to students whose artworks were selected for the âUndergraduate Juried 2022â showcase. The exhibition and awards were presented at the Contemporary Gallery of the Center for Art & Theatre on the Statesboro Campus.
The âUndergraduate Juried 2022â showcase features the variety of media taught within the BFSDoArt, which includes drawing, painting, jewelry, multimedia, mixed media, photography, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics. More than 130 artworks were submitted to the exhibition and 70 were accepted into the show.
Lou McCall, a studio art senior, was awarded Best in Show for her wooden sculpture âUntitled.â Best 2D was awarded to Imani Ingram, a first-year 2D studio art student, for her oil painting âSelf-Portrait.â
âIt means the world to know that the hundreds of meticulous little paint blobs I dotted were even good enough for consideration,â said Ingram. âI’m incredibly grateful for the win and I hope I only improve from here.â
Cierra Horton, a graphic design senior, was awarded Best 3D for her ceramic sculpture âFragmented Sight.â Horton said she was shocked when she won.
âWhen I submitted the piece I had no idea if it would get accepted or not,â said Horton. âWhen I create a piece Iâm creating it more for me than for an audience. So, when it did get accepted, I was content with just being in the show.â
Quinderrious Humphrey is a 2D studio art senior. He submitted his silkscreen âVariations,â and received an honorable mention.
âIt made me realize that creativity takes courage and sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith,â said Humphrey.
The annual âUndergraduate Juriedâ exhibition is one of my favorites,â said Jason Hoelscher, gallery director for the BFSDoArt. âWe are an interdisciplinary department, and this is reflected in the diversity of work in the show, ranging from ceramics and small metals to digital design and animation and more.â
âUndergraduate Juried 2022â finalists were Jalen Austin, Andrea Baldridge, Jackson Branton, Madison Brewer, Morgan Bruner, Casidy Byrum, Carlos Carvajal, Caitlin Ceccotti, CJ Cook, Madi Cowart, Katsi Cruz Delgado, Brianna Davis, Anna Forbes, Leslie Anne Flynn, Vanessa Franquez, Breannan Gamez, Kailey Gaskin, Anthony Geguzis, Sam Gloves, Zoe Hagins, Natalie Harrison, Bentley Hendrix, Cierra Horton, Emma Hughes, Quinderrious Humphrey, Elizabeth Hunter, Emily Hunter, Imani Ingram, Ashlyn Jeffcoat, Garett Joyle, Rae Keller, Brandon Levin, Michael Masak, Lou McCall, Noah Mirabile, Ashley Monaghan, Jenardis Mountain, Aubrei Perkins, Jaila Petersen, Abigail Rodriguez-Colon, Mary Shepherd, Ainslee Silverthorne, Charity Stanton, Melanie Stone, Jami-Lee Sullivan, Julianna Tillman, Hannah Torreira and Madison Yocum.
âUndergraduate Juriedâ was juried by Savannah-based artist Will Penny. His art explores tensions between the tangible space a painting inhabits, the impact of digital technology on fabricated forms and illusionistic environments.
