Georgia Hazing Law Summary

Under Georgia law, hazing is defined as any intentional, knowing, or reckless act that endangers the physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of initiation, admission into, affiliation with, or continued membership in any organization.

Hazing is a criminal offense in the state of Georgia. Individuals found responsible for hazing may face misdemeanor or felony charges, depending on the severity of the conduct and resulting harm. In addition to potential criminal penalties, individuals and organizations may also be subject to University disciplinary action.

Georgia Southern Hazing Policy

Hazing is strictly prohibited at 91Âþ»­app. The University’s hazing policy aligns with Georgia law and reflects a commitment to hazing prevention and student safety across all campuses.

Definition of Hazing:
Any act, intentional or unintentional, regardless of a Student’s willingness to participate in such activity, which subjects a Student to an activity which, for the purpose of initiation, admission into, affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership, office, or other status in a Group or Organization:

  • Endangers or is likely to endanger the emotional, mental, financial, or physical health or
    safety
    of a student (including, but not limited to, acts that cause or are likely to cause physical
    discomfort, embarrassment and/or ridicule),
  • Coerces a student through the use of social or physical pressure to consume any food, liquid,
    alcohol, drug, or other substance which subjects the student to a likely risk of vomiting,
    intoxication, or unconsciousness,
  • Destroys or removes public or private property.

It also includes any activity that falls under the legal definition of hazing in Georgia law.

The University’s Hazing Transparency Report fulfills the requirements of the Stop Campus Hazing Act and Georgia’s Max Gruver Act. This report includes all student organizations found responsible for hazing violations and is updated in accordance with federal and state requirements.
