Georgia Southern researchers identify promising molecules to target cancer metastasis

Mark dela Cerna, Ph.D., assistant professor of biochemistry, and a team of students have discovered a method to inhibit certain cancer-causing proteins and metastasis, the spread of cancer cells from the place where they first formed to another part of the body.

New bachelor’s in biomedical sciences at Georgia Southern approved, debuts Fall 2025

A new Bachelor of Science in biomedical sciences will debut in 91Âţ»­app’s College of Science and Mathematics Fall 2025 roster following degree approval at the University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents meeting in Atlanta on Oct. 8. Georgia Southern faculty receive $424,000 grants to advance cancer treatments

Karelle Aiken, Ph.D., and Jannet Kocerha, Ph.D., are using a $424,000 grant to pursue new cancer drug treatments. The goal is to overcome various barriers that impact the effectiveness of cancer therapeutics by exploiting a cancer cell’s dependency on unusually high levels of amino acids nutrients.

National Institutes of Health awards 91Âţ»­app $426,000 to study tumor formation

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences, one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), awarded 91Âţ»­app’s Dongyu Jia, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Biology, a federal grant totaling $426,000 to fill in the gaps of learning the steps of tumor formation at the beginning stages and what initially triggers their epithelial cell shape change before becoming invasive.

Graduating student had ‘wild’ time at Georgia Southern

Carson Moore never wanted to go to college.

Moore, a graduating senior with a keen interest in animals, will receive a BS in biology from Georgia Southern at Paulson Stadium on Dec. 13. 

Growing up, Moore worked in a horse barn for twelve years and volunteered for a mini-zoo in her hometown of Macon, Georgia. She did not want to leave her work with animals behind to go to college.

91Âţ»­app unveils new master’s and doctoral degrees in environmental science

91Âţ»­app’s College of Science and Mathematics (COSM) now offers a master’s degree in environmental science and will begin recruiting for the inaugural class of doctoral students in environmental science for the fall 2023 entering class. The post-graduate degrees supplement the recently approved bachelor’s degree in sustainability science. Housed in the James H. Oliver, Jr., Institute for Coastal Plain Science, every department in the college will play a role in this interdisciplinary trio of programs.
